Why do we steek, when do we steek, and what are the various options? Working colorwork in the round creates tubes; steeks are extra stitches added where an opening needs to be, for a cardigan, for sleeve openings, and necklines. These extra stitch columns will later be cut open. We will learn 3 methods of reinforcing steeks to secure them before cutting and consider fancy finishing. Students will bring their completed homework swatches to class and YES, we will CUT our knitting! Don't fret—cutting your knitting is liberating!

Technique Requirements: knit/purl, cast on/bind off, working in the round, chart reading, have knit a few accessories, easy colorwork

Completed homework swatch from the pattern, which will be sent to those registered for the class.

Yarn needed for one homework swatch: 2 colors of a worsted-weight wool yarn; 45 yd [46m] dark color and 35 yds [23m] light color. A minimally processed “grippy” wool is ideal—steer clear of superwash. You will need at least one swatch; feel free to knit more, for more classroom practice!

Needles needed for homework:  Your preferred needle for working small-diameter pieces in the round, double-pointed needles or long circular needle for Magic Loop in size US7 [4.5 mm].

Notions for class: Hand sewing needle and thread, tapestry needle for wool, size F crochet hook (or a hook smaller than the needle used for your colorwork). Non superwash wool yarn finer than yarn used for swatch. Homework swatch pattern (it will be sent those registered for the class).
